Poll Says Canadians Oppose Temporary Worker

An Angus Reid poll conducted in behalf of the Asia Pacific Foundation says in its result that more than half of Canadians oppose the recruitment of temporary worker to help Canadian businesses in it’s latest need for additional manpower.

The poll released middle of April 2008 also shows that most Canadians still welcome immigrants from Asia, although not as welcoming as before, especially in the province of Quebec. Quebecois show of goodwill to Asian immigrants fell to 44 percent this year from last years 83 percent.

The survey also indicated that 60 percent of the respondents believe that China is more of an opportunity than a threat to Canada – but two out of three Canadians is also concerned about China’s growing military modernization in the Asia Pacific area.

Alberta posted the highest support for the federal government’s temporary worker program at 58 percent. Manitoba and Saskatchewan came next at 55 percentage both and then British Columbia, third at 49 percent.

In the provinces of Ontario and Quebec, only 39 percent of those surveyed support the federal temporary worker program. Both provinces have been the most affected by the latest economic difficulty and have already lost many jobs.

In the whole of Canada, in general, only 44 percent of the people supports the temporary guest worker program initiative of the federal government.
