Out of all the different professions, being a live-in caregiver is one of the most lucrative careers in Canada. In fact, live-in caregivers are so in demand today, so much so that the Canadian government offers them with the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after completing 24 months or 3,900 hours of full-time employment as an authorized live-in caregiver. Due to this offer, many individuals use this program as a bridge toward becoming a Canada permanent resident card recipient.
There are, however, certain requirements before an individual can qualify as a live-in caregiver. Out of all these, one of the most important is related training/education or experience. What does this cover? Well, this particular regulation requires a person to have at least six months of formal classroom training in areas related to care giving. These could include pediatric nursing, childhood education, geriatric care, or first aid training. Or, a person must have one year of work experience in a field that is related to being a live-in caregiver. That one year of work should be within three years before the application, and at least six months of that should be continuous employment with a single employer.
The Canadian government is particularly strict about this specific requirement. There are specific job experiences or trainings whose required skills are considered transferable to that needed in being a caregiver. But, a person applying for the program should present and demonstrate enough proof to support this claim.
When applying for a work permit to Canada, a thorough interview is conducted to assess the skills and experiences of the applicant. After the interview, inquiries may be made to the applicants’ previous employers to check whether the claimed experience, training, or skill could be used or transferred to care giving. There are certain applications that are denied after finding out that the claimed experience involves skills that are not actually related or transferable to care giving. With this fact, it is of utmost importance for all applicants to provide proof supporting the credibility of the experiences or trainings that they had.
Other than the mentioned requirement, other credentials needed when applying for Canada’s live-in caregiver program are: a work permit, a contract signed between employer and employee, completion of secondary school education equivalent to that of Canada’s, good communication skills in French or English, a positive Labour Market Opinion (LMO), plus all other immigration requirements.
